July 20th saw the formal signing of a EU-China agreement on geographical indication (GI) protection on items, including 59 Chinese teas.
The agreement outlines a plan for 100 products from each region to be protected, with the use of official certification marks on products. After 4 years, the plan then extends to 175 additional products for each side.
The first phase includes 28 teas in the initial group of Chinese products, followed by 31 teas in a subsequent set 4 years later.
Market studies in the EU on geographical indication (GI) indicate that products with the GI mark sell for 2x the price of similar non-GI products.
